Pam Ertel, BSN

The People You'll
Meet at OR Excellence

Pam Ertel, BSN, executive director of the Reading Hospital SurgiCenter in Wyomissing, Pa., always checks when OR Excellence will he held and circles the dates on her calendar. The quality and variety of the program's content and the friendly atmosphere make it the one conference she's sure to attend each year. Make plans now to meet Ms. Ertel and other top surgical leaders in Las Vegas at the Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa Oct. 11-13.

Why she's a regular at OR Excellence. It has a blend of information that applies to both acute care hospitals and ASCs. I'm not going to go to a conference that covers only inpatient topics, and the other meetings I've been to about ambulatory surgical care only reference what goes on in surgery centers. There's a whole other aspect of management that we deal with under the hospital umbrella, and OR Excellence hits on those topics. The speakers are interesting and the content focuses on all aspects of running a facility, including the business side of things, without hitting on the same topics over and over again. Plus, it's always held in beautiful locations and the facilities are perfect venues for conferences.

On the talks she's sure to see. I went to last year's total joints workshop run by the team from Excelsior Orthopaedics and used a lot of their information during my presentation to our facility's board about getting our same-day joints program off the ground. I noticed the Excelsior team is going to discuss how their program works in more detail at this year's conference, so I'm looking forward to hearing from them again. My facility is staffed with some nurses who are 70 years old and some who are fresh out of school, so I'm also planning on going to Ann Geier's talk about getting the most out of each generation of workers.

On returning to the Red Rock Resort. We were there the last time the conference was in Vegas. It's a beautiful hotel and my husband loved going to the casino. We spent a lot of time at the resort and had a lot of fun. We also saw a show on the Strip one night — it was easy to get there — and visited the Skywalk at the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. This time we're heading out the day before the conference starts to explore outdoor activities in the Red Rock Canyon. I'm also excited to check out shopping in Downtown Summerlin, which is right behind the resort.

Why she loves OR Excellence. It's a very friendly atmosphere where family members feel welcome. My husband won't miss it. He says it's the best conference he goes to with me and he's ready to head back to Vegas. The exhibit hall is manageable, so you can take your time at each booth and really learn about all the products. I go to other conferences sporadically, but always make time in my schedule for OR Excellence. It's hard to explain, but it just has a better vibe than all the other meetings.
