The People You'll
Meet at OR Excellence

Darlene Dodson Harvey, MSN, RN, CNOR, the OR Manager at Baylor, Scott & White Health in Taylor, Texas, had never been to OR Excellence, so she wanted to see for herself what makes the conference unlike any other she's experienced. Make plans now to meet Ms. Harvey and other top surgical leaders in Las Vegas at the Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa Oct. 11-13.

Why she decided to attend OR Excellence. Our healthcare system encourages its employees to seek educational opportunities at various conferences. I've heard great things about the meeting, so I'm looking forward to going. My biggest goal when I go to conferences is to come away with a pearl or two to implement back at work. Of course, I also love Vegas, so I decided to get the best of both worlds.

On the challenges she's currently facing. I work at a 25-bed critical access hospital with 2 ORs in a rural part of Texas. Even though the hospital is under the umbrella of a major healthcare organization, like most rural facilities, capital funds are on a tight budget. My biggest current struggle is getting new OR equipment at a decent price that won't break my budget for the year. I'm also trying to connect with the millennials on my staff. I want to figure out how to get the most out of the younger nurses I manage and would like to get ideas from other administrators at the conference as to how to do that effectively.

On what she demands from her staff. I was a high school teacher for many years and taught at a nursing school. I wanted every one of my students to do their best at all times, and that's what I now expect from my staff. The name of the conference says it all. OR Excellence. I want excellence from each member of my team on a daily basis.

On what she's looking forward to doing in Vegas. I've been many times. My husband and I went two years ago. That was his first time there, and he's not a gambler, so he was worried about finding things to do. I'm also not a big gambler, but there's still plenty of fun to be had. We took a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon. My husband's father was a helicopter pilot, so he enjoyed that the most. I did, too. It was fabulous. My husband will be accompanying me to the conference. We'll enjoy the wine tasting event in the exhibit hall, along with other sight-seeing activities. I love to network, so definitely stop me at the conference to say hello.

You are going to LOVE this meeting!
