The People You'll
Meet at OR Excellence

Roger Alban, RN, BSN, assistant clinical director at the Eye Center of Columbus (Ohio), is heading to OR Excellence next month to check out the latest offerings in the exhibit hall and network with surgical leaders from across the country. There's still time to join Mr. Alban in Fort Lauderdale at the Harbor Beach Marriott & Spa for the conference you're sure to love.

Why he chose OR Excellence. Our administrator had gone for several years, but last year was my first time attending. I'm going back because it's a conference where I can obtain a lot of useful information, not only from the speakers, but also from the vendors and other attendees. Many of the attendees are from larger facilities and have experience solving some of the problems I'm facing. The vendors in the exhibit hall are well-versed in how to help facilities improve their practices. In fact, a vendor at last year's conference helped me lower the cost of the combination drops we use at our ophthalmic facility.

On what makes the conference different. It's structured to encourage interaction among attendees, speakers and vendors, and the connections you make are more personal than those you make at some of the bigger conferences. You also head home with a lot of useful information that you can implement immediately. This meeting is definitely a productive use of your time.

On the talks he's looking forward to hearing. One of the current challenges we're facing is staff's use of smartphones. I'm interested to hear what Dr. Peter Papadakos has to say about the issue during his talk on distracted doctoring and patient-centered care during the digital age. It's great that smartphones provide staff and physicians with access to unlimited information, but we need to ensure the devices are used appropriately.

What he would tell others about OR Excellence. The conference is a great networking opportunity — it's helpful to connect with leaders from facilities that are similar to yours, so you can share ideas and discuss opportunities for improvement. I'm still in touch with several people I met at last year's meeting and we call each other often for advice.

On vising Fort Lauderdale. My wife is planning on tagging along and we're excited to hit the beach! We’re from Ohio, so sand and warm weather in October sounds like paradise.

You are going to LOVE this meeting!
