The People You'll
Meet at OR Excellence

Sandy Prestia, BSN, CNOR, nurse manager of surgical services at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, Maine, is heading to OR Excellence for the first time to add to her management skills. Register today to meet Ms. Prestia and other surgical leaders in Fort Lauderdale at the Harbor Beach Marriott & Spa Oct. 3-5.

Why she chose OR Excellence. My director recommended it. He was new to the OR when he went and said the small, personal atmosphere helped him learn. He also liked how the conference was geared toward surgical leadership and told me to definitely check out what the exhibit hall has to offer, so I'm looking forward to that. As a first-time attendee, I'm hoping to get the tools I need to expand my management skills and to develop connections and relationships with other surgical leaders.

On what makes OR Excellence different. I've been to other conferences that are huge. I sometimes sit there and think, Where do I go, and what do I do? But OR Excellence is a smaller group. That intimate feel is one of the things I'm looking forward to experiencing — it's not going to be overwhelming.

She's looking forward to these talks. I'm a fairly new nurse manager. I've been a charge nurse and a lead RN, but it's challenging when you advance from peer to manager. That's why the "Overwhelmed Executive Administrator Syndrome" talk appeals to me. I would love advice on how to sort through and prioritize my responsibilities. I'm very focused on patient and staff safety, and want to learn more about those topics. I'm also looking forward to "Dealing With Disruptive Physicians: A Manager's Perspective." You can't work in the OR very long before you're faced with that scenario. It'd be great to learn some tricks of the trade for maintaining viable working relationships with difficult surgeons.

On the conference's networking opportunities. Getting a chance to talk with leaders from other facilities is a great learning opportunity. We can compare notes and discuss solutions that have helped solve common problems. I'm hoping to learn more about endoscope cleaning, preventing workplace violence, and keeping staff and patients safe. I've made connections at other meetings, but believe that I will get to know people a lot better at a more intimate conference like OR Excellence.

You are going to LOVE this meeting!
